How One Couple Said Goodbye to $78,000 of Debt + Other Side Hustle Success Stories

In the words of Cardi B, “All I really wanna see is the money.” Building up savings and learning how to budget is always hard, and today saving money is more important than ever. If your day job isn’t getting you all that you need – maybe you want to consider a side-hustle. Check this article out — and maybe you’ll be inspired! Of course, if you need help with your structured settlement — without compromising your future! — we are here to get you what you want AND what you need.

Sometimes, a side hustle can save your life—ask some of the furloughed federal workers who spent 35 days without a paycheck earlier this year.

Thirty-one percent of American workers have side gigs, including freelance work, childcare or driving for Lyft or Uber, according to a 2018 Jobvite study. It can pay off: A recent Bankrate survey of more than 1,000 workers found that side hustlers earned an average of $686 a month extra, with some earning much more. Where to begin?

“The closer you can get to what you do during your day job, the more lucrative the side hustle,” says Jen Smith, personal finance expert at the Penny Hoarder. A few years ago, Smith and her husband, Travis, used her expertise as an acupuncturist and his as an airplane mechanic to take on extra gigs (in addition to their full-time jobs) that helped them pay off $78,000 worth of debt in two years. (They side-hustled 10 to 20 hours a week.)

You can monetize hobbies too, from baking to knitting to fitness training. Federal workers and sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqi Wright sold their homemade Furlough Cheesecakes online ($29.98 each) during the government shutdown, a side gig they’re continuing even though they’re back at work.

Rent out your driveway or parking space.

Apps like Neighbor, Spacer and CurbFlip let you list your parking space in your building or driveway and connect you with drivers eager to find a secure spot. Right now a parking spot in downtown Seattle goes for $150 a month, while a space near the Pittsburgh airport is $50 a week on CurbFlip (the company keeps 16 percent). Spacer says you can earn $2,000 to $4,800 a year renting out your garage.

Become a local tour guide.

Turn your love for your neighborhood into dollars by giving tours. Guides for Vayable.com, a service that connects travelers with personalized tours and local guides, offers unique experiences: the “guy who ate Queens” takes visitors through the best Chinese restaurants in the borough ($95 per person for three hours), while in San Francisco a graffiti aficionado offers a “Scout for Street Art” tour ($40 per person for three hours). Vayable keeps 25 percent.

Rent a Local Friend connects travelers with in-the-know locals. Rates (including a 30 percent booking fee): $156 for four hours in Portland, Oregon, or $90 to $390 in New York City.

Tours By Locals offers free training and marketing and keeps roughly 20 percent. Rates: $290 for four hours in Washington, D.C.; $395 for a four-hour walking tour of Charleston, South Carolina.

Be a mystery shopper.

“It’s my favorite way to make money because it’s not like work,” Smith says. Mystery shoppers pretend to be regular customers (at stores, bars, restaurants), then provide feedback. Smith once test-drove a car for $60.

Caveats: Never pay to join a mystery shopping company, and make sure the company belongs to the MSPA (Mystery Shopping Providers Association). Smith recommends Best Mark, Sinclair Customer Metrics, Market Force, Intelli-shop and Experience Exchange (she’s shopped for all of them).

Take care of pets.

Americans love their pets, to the tune of spending almost $6.5 billion dollars on pet services like grooming, boarding, and exercising. Forbes called pet care “one of the best recession-proof industries.” Rover.com connects pet owners with would-be walkers and sitters (Rover keeps 20 percent of the fee). Or try Care.com (scroll down for pet-related links), Wag!, PetSitter.com or Fetch!

Average pay: $1,000 a month for part-time work, according to Rover, with the potential to earn $3,000 or more.

Smith suggests trying to dig up business on your own before working through an app because then you get to keep 100 percent of what you earn. Post notices in your local coffee shop or library offering pet sitting or dog walking services, she says. “Trying to build those relationships organically can definitely benefit monetarily.”
